MAI LING's interior has recently been completely refurbished with new cushions, upholstery, pillows, and curtains. All the teak below decks was stripped and revarnished. (We did have help)! MAI LING is ideal for 4 people (2 guests and the owners) as the below decks spaces include 2 separate cabins for sleeping each with an adjoining head [bathroom] and shower and a main cabin for waking activities. The Captain's Quarters where the owners sleep are aft and separated from the guest's sleeping areas by the main cabin, the center cockpit, and the engine room thus maximizing privacy. The main cabin has the galley and the dining area with 2 six foot settees and a drop leaf teak table. On deck, the walkways are wide and there are several places outside for sitting or lying down. Life lines and teak hand rails on the cabin tops make it easier to move about.
We are fair weather sailors up to the challenge of a bad blow and high seas but we are not out looking for ways to test ourselves or our guests against nature on a rampage. We welcome assistance at the helm, with the lines and navigation. If you are a novice wanting to know more we will be glad to help you learn. We prefer to sail and will motor sail or use the engine alone when necessary. Water depth, weather, time and safety factors permitting, we will set sail for any destination you request.
We suggest that you satisfy your taste for batter dipped, deep fried foods on shore. Neither of us are gourmet cooks but are willing to experiment if you want to demonstrate your culinary skills. The staples include a wide variety of spices and ingredients for tasty as well as creative meals. We will try to obtain any item for which you make a special request. Please, remember that we are limited to what is available at the local markets. Without special requests the fare will include fresh, natural, unprocessed, low fat, whole grain foods. Whenever practical canned, boxed, and prepared foods are selected to avoid sodium, sucrose, nitrates, hydrogenated oils and preservatives----Oreos, Triscuits and Wheat Thins not withstanding.
During the Summer we operate from the Town Dock in Jamestown, Rhode Island which is the island in the mouth of Narragansett Bay between the two bridges on the way to Newport. Jamestown is a one hour drive from Boston and only three hours from New York City. Jamestown is only twenty one miles from Block Island and twenty five miles from Cuttyhunk which is at the gateway to Martha's Vineyard, Woods Hole, and Nantucket. In the Spring and Fall we follow the sun via the Intracoastal Waterway. That takes us through Chesapeake Bay, possibly through the Dismal Swamp Canal, the Carolina Sounds, perhaps to the Outer Banks, to antebellum towns, rural villages (where you can hear "Gullah" spoken), Charlestown and Savannah, along barrier islands, past most all of the pre Civil War Forts including Fort Sumter and many Wildlife Refuges. Winter months we spend in Florida. Of particular interest to us are the Okeechobee and Wilderness Waterways in the Everglades where pink flamingos have begun nesting again. Other favorites are Sanibel Island, Key West and possibly a visit to Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortougas.
Major transportation centers are all along our route. We will assist you in your travel plans.
Five, six or seven days and nights equal one week. The weekly rate would be pro-rated for slightly longer cruises with extended cruises negotiated individually. The price includes water, ice, and insurance. It does not include dockage, food, or fuel. The cost of on board food we share proportionally and all shore side expenses are Dutch treat. The charge for one person is ¾ of the price for two people. A deposit of 50% of the base price along with a signed letter of mutual agreement will secure your dates. The balance is payable in cash prior to boarding.
We can informally introduce you to the theories, challenges, skills and resources associated with safe and enjoyable coastal cruising. We can offer you hands on experience as we travel together and suggest readings from the almanacs, guides, technical, and theoretical books in MAI LING's resource library. You can learn about anchors and anchoring; chart symbols, plotting, dead reckoning and daily planning. And LORAN, CPS, VHF, RDF, AWI, WS, DS, KM, SSB, and abbreviations for electronic gear. And sail, canvas, gear selection and maintenance, general boat maintenance, mechanical and electrical maintenance, and crew maintenance. And weather, weather maps, NOAA weather reports and forecasts. You may choose the focus and depth of your learning experiences.
Bob grew up on a rural island in Narragansett Bay and had his first boat at age five. He graduated from Tabor Academy, a Naval Honor Academy. He was in the US Navy for two years in the engine room of the USS CROSS. In the '60s and '70s he was sales manager of Pearson Yachts and Freedom Yachts.
Jinny grew up inland [Longmeadow, Massachusetts]
and first sailed in a TECH DINGHY on the Charles
River in Boston during her first year in college. A
former nursery school teacher/owner, Jinny shifted
gears and became a family therapist and religious
educator.
We raised our three children day sailing and racing
CAT boats and other small cruising sail boats. We
have five grandchildren whom we adore and admire!
Since 1981 we have cruised more than 100,000 miles
including ten winters in the Bahamas. We have
enjoyed sharing our life style with paying guests
since 1983 and have made many new friends. We both
hold OCEAN OPERATOR licenses from the US COAST
GUARD.

PLEASE give us your telephone numbers and convenient times to call. Evening and weekends are the best times for us to call you. Our preference is to have a preliminary meeting with you on the phone. With the computer we are able to easily use email to communicate when it is connected to our newly (23 MAY) purchased Sprint PCS phone. I'm still learning how to take advantage of the many nuances on the new phone. Calling us on our AT&T Wireless phone @ 401 965 5154 is the quickest way to reach us if time is of the essence.
Also, please remember we are cruising sailors. We may be on the move and we anchor out a lot by preference, often in remote areas. There may be a delay before you receive an initial response from us. Please call back if you do not hear from us in a day or two. AT&T Wireless service is wonderful but not without a few bugs.
Thank you for your interest in our adventures. Updated 15 July 01.
